Understanding Today's Pediatric

CDI Landscape

The intensifying focus on pediatrics within CDI is driving dedicated pediatric CDI teams to seize new opportunities to improve quality, patient safety, and financial outcomes.

Despite significant strides, pediatric CDI still confronts unique hurdles, including systems and technologies originally designed for adult patients and the absence of standardized terminology and clinical indicators specific to children’s illnesses. In response, leaders in the field are advocating for more refined, pediatric-focused solutions to enhance CDI practices, workflows, and education.

A recent ACDIS survey, sponsored by Nuance, a Microsoft Company, pinpoints the most impactful areas for pediatric CDI and highlights the expanding role of artificial intelligence (AI) as an essential tool in optimizing pediatric CDI practices. In this special report, two pediatric CDI leaders share their perspectives from the research and discuss primary challenges within pediatric CDI, educational developments, and the transformative potential of AI in supporting pediatric CDI teams.

  • According to the survey, the most impactful areas for pediatric CDI are improved physician engagement (26%) and quality rankings (25%), alongside increases in chart reviews (17%) and reduction in denials (9%).
  • Survey data indicates that the most significant impacts of AI in pediatric CDI are expected in clinical validation (25%), quality management (17%), and DRG auditing and staff collaboration (15% each), followed by denials management (9%).
  • According to the survey, the top sources for pediatric education are ACDIS (73%), technology/software vendors (37%), and AHIMA (31%)
